A service designed for vehicles that need the ultimate gentle detailing process, with zero pressure washing, and the latest advanced cleaning products - it's a rinseless, a complete contact clean, that uses lubricants to clean "dry," in the traditional sense.
Bilt Hamber Phat-Neut is a pH-neutral, multi-mode rinseless wash, which removes real-world traffic film with cleaning power surpassing all other pH7 cleaners. Used as a rinseless wash, waterless cleaner, applied using a pump-spray prewash, wheel cleaner, and targeted contamination remover.
Using Bilt Hamber's Lift-Mode Technology, Phat-Neut lowers surface tension to wet, encapsulate and lift mineral-rich road film, brake dust, tyre residue, insects, bird lime, and general grime away from the surface without relying on caustic alkalinity, solvents, or aggressive chemistry.
Preparation
Goal: To create the showroom finishes I'm known for without using traditional and popular exterior detailing methods.
All chemicals are mixed to the correct ratio's using de-ionised water.
Protection
Modern automotive clear coats—especially the water-based lacquers pioneered on 1990s modern classics like the Audi S3 — are highly susceptible to micro-marring. Traditional contact washing methods often trap sharp dirt particles between the wash mitt and the paint, dragging them across the lacquer to create web-like swirl marks.
By shifting from physical abrasion to advanced surfactant chemistry, you can achieve an optically pure, sterile finish without inflicting mechanical damage. This article breaks down the molecular science behind a high-end, low-moisture three-stage process: Bilt Hamber Touch-Less via pump sprayer, followed by Phat-Neut encapsulation, and finishing with Auto-QD cross-linking.
Phase 1: Bilt Hamber Touch-Less (The Pre-Wash Film Stripper)
The Chemistry of Sugar-Based Surfactants
Traditional boutique snow foams rely on heavy, aesthetic, polymer-based foaming agents to create a thick, visual "shaving foam" blanket. This dense structure is structurally inefficient; it traps the active cleaning ingredients inside air pockets, preventing them from making direct contact with the vehicle's paintwork.
Bilt Hamber Touch-Less utilizes highly fluid, biodegradable, sugar-based surfactants. These molecules are uniquely engineered to drastically lower the surface tension of water, allowing the solution to break down the electrostatic bonds holding microscopic dirt to the clear coat.
The Dwell Mechanism and Capillary Action
Because a pump-sprayed application of Touch-Less creates a wet, moving chemical sheet rather than a static foam blanket, it benefits from intense capillary action. The thin fluid creeps effortlessly under brittle exterior trim clips, badges, and panel gaps.
As it flows slowly down vertical panels, it creates a continuous chemical sheet. Fresh, unexhausted surfactants are constantly exposed to the stubborn, oily road traffic film, dissolving it uniformly without drying out in patches.
The Visual Indicator: "Slow vs. Fast" Runoff
The physical behavior of Touch-Less changes based on the level of surface contamination:
The Deionised Water Advantage
Standard tap water is loaded with dissolved mineral ions like calcium and magnesium. Surfactants naturally attempt to bind with these minerals first, depleting their cleaning potential before they ever touch the car. In colchester our water is 400 PPM, just 100 PPM under what is safe to drink, classified as heavy, and prone to significant water spot damage.
Mixing Touch-Less with pure deionised water frees up 100% of the active surfactants to target the vehicle's traffic film. This results in a tighter, more uniform chemical cling and a significantly deeper clean.
Phase 2: Bilt Hamber Phat-Neut (The Lubricated Wipe Setup)
Physical Contamination Encapsulation
Even after a comprehensive touchless pre-wash, microscopic mineral structures or static residues can remain bonded to the lacquer. Bilt Hamber Phat-Neut is a highly concentrated, specialized rinseless wash engineered to handle this remaining film through physical encapsulation rather than aggressive chemical stripping.
The high-viscosity polymers in Phat-Neut form a microscopic, lubricating boundary layer over the paint. When a plush microfibre towel passes over the panel, the polymers surround each individual particle of dirt, lifting it away from the panel. The dirt rolls harmoniously over the clear coat within a liquid polymer cushion, eliminating the friction that causes micro-scratches and swirls.
Maintaining the Safe pH-Neutral Boundary
Phat-Neut maintains a strict pH of 7.0 (completely neutral). Modern high-pH traffic film removers (TFRs) rely on caustic sodium hydroxide to strip dirt, which degrades protective waxes, bleaches delicate rubbers, and strains older paint systems.
Phat-Neut’s neutral chemistry cleans deeply without altering the integrity of underlying layers, such as Bilt Hamber Double Speed-Wax, making it completely safe for regular maintenance.
Managing the Polymer Flash Point
Because Phat-Neut contains a high density of protective structural polymers, it has a strict flash point during application. If the water carrier evaporates too quickly—due to direct sunlight, warm panels, or working too slowly—these dense polymers quickly lock solid onto the clear coat, creating a stubborn haze.
If hazing occurs, attempting to buff it dry will only create friction against the cured polymer boundary. Re-wetting the panel immediately with deionised water or fresh wash solution breaks the polymer bonds, reactivating the formula so it can be wiped away cleanly.
Phase 3: Bilt Hamber Auto-QD (The Cross-Linking Gloss Protector)
The Carnauba-Polymer Matrix
The final stage utilizes Bilt Hamber Auto-QD, an advanced quick detailing spray formulated with an emulsified blend of high-grade T1 carnauba wax and specialized glossing polymers. This combination targets two distinct automotive finishes: the polymers provide crisp, mirror-like reflections and high surface slickness, while the natural carnauba fills microscopic paint imperfections to add a rich, warm visual depth.
Molecular Cross-Linking and the Auto-QD Trick
When Auto-QD is misted onto a damp panel or directly into a drying towel, it undergoes molecular cross-linking. It chemically blends with any remaining polymer boundaries left behind by the Phat-Neut phase.
Instead of fighting the residual Phat-Neut polymers, the Auto-QD acts as a flashing drying aid. It re-emulsifies the surface layer, allowing both formulas to blend into a single, uniform, protective topcoat. As the liquid carriers evaporate, these combined polymers cure into a hard, hydro-phobic shield that rejuvenates underlying protection (like Double Speed-Wax) and creates a smooth, low-friction surface.
